The Asian Waterbird Census (abbreviated to AWC) is a voluntary annual activity conducted in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of January each year. It is a waterbird monitoring activity coordinated by Wetlands International.

What Are Wetlands?

Wetlands occur where water meets land. They include mangroves, peatlands and marshes, rivers and lakes, deltas, floodplains and flooded forests, rice-fields, and even coral reefs. Wetlands exist in every country and in every climatic zone, from the polar regions to the tropics, and from high altitudes to dry regions. Read more...

Species

Indonesia is rich in waterbirds; it is home to about 380 species of these wetland dependent bird species. Waterbirds are extremely important both from a conservation and recreational point of view. Most of these species have adapted to the drastically changing conditions of wetlands through their migratory behaviour.
