Peatland conservation and restoration
This policy analysis of the Government Regulation 71/2014 on the Protection and Management of Peat Ecosystems shows the gaps in the current regulation and presents recommendations for strengthening the law. The current regulation still leaves gaps and loopholes for the continuation of peat fires, CO2 emissions, biodiversity loss, peat subsidence and floods as it assumes that drainage can be controlled. However, any drainage is detrimental to peatlands and limited drainage can only moderately reduce adverse effects and cannot be considered a sustainable practice.
