The year 2019 has been pivotal for mainstreaming the Building with Nature approach in Indonesia and to move beyond a pilot in Demak. The project has been inspiring many dialogues on coastal resilience in Indonesia, Asia and globally. Through a built-in mainstreaming component, our programme has already led to replication and to growing support for up-scaling. The latest Building with Nature Indonesia newsletter includes our most important updates on the project.

With one more year ahead for the current programme in Indonesia, we will be focusing on:

  • The sustainability of our achievements in Demak beyond the project lifetime
  • Ensuring that the knowledge and lessons of the Demak project are being shared widely to serve as a model for the region, while at the same time also clarifying that Building with Nature solutions are always site-specific.
  • Promoting the use of the Building with Nature approach and design process also to other settings (sandy shores and reefs, rivers, cities, harbours) combining green and grey in an optimal mix alongside other measures for risk reduction.
