To make societies and ecosystems more resilient and reduce climate risks, we need to safeguard and restore wetlands – the essential systems that supply and purify water, protect our shores, sequester carbon, ensure livelihoods, and support abundant and unique nature all over the world. We will be participating in various key events throughout World Water Week that show how we inspire, mobilise and upscale ecosystem-centric resilience in wetland landscapes, by integrating innovative water solutions through multi-stakeholder participation and bottom-up approaches. Climate Smart Transboundary River Basin Development

Summary: This event will reflect on the capacity of River Basin Organizations for preparing bankable climate action proposals for transboundary basin development as part of a global dialogue on financing climate action through the water sector. Wetlands International will present a practical example of supporting stakeholders on the ground to leverage and mobilize additional resources for climate change action within the planning and management basin wide frameworks.

Summary: We share the approach of the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council and its Partners, particularly the Hineleban Foundation, Incorporated, in building resilient societies by supporting rainforestation for forest restoration in Lirongan, Bukidnon and promoting financial landscape investment from various sources for forest restoration through integrated river basin management.

Water Resource Management for WASH: strengthening communities for climate resilience

Summary: Climate vulnerability and resilience (CVR) is a cross-cutting theme within the Netherlands WASH SDG programme. This session provides interactive, virtual field visits to successful IWRM interventions where participants are invited to interact with community members and programme staff. In Ethiopia we will showcase catchment restoration and in Uganda, constructed wetlands.

Inclusive practices in water climate adaptation

Summary: Social inclusion in water climate adaptation contributes to better, more equitable solutions for water challenges. In this session, different practical approaches for improving social inclusion will be discussed. Wetlands International will participate as a panelist, responding to practical case studies and stakeholder experiences from water climate adaptation, to help partners improve social inclusion in practice.

Private Public Potential: incremental project innovations for resilience and impact

Summary: The 40+ projects, 150 million Euro Netherlands Sustainable Water Fund (SWF) contributes to today’s challenges by disseminating its key lessons learned. With a special focus to WASH, IWRM and Water Efficiency in agriculture, SWF provides a wealth of practical insights in private and public sector involvement in water, Covid-19 mitigating, public health and climate change adaptation that are essential for boosting resilience in nature and societies. Wetlands International will be discussing how the soft side of collaboration in private public potential is critical for integrated resilience.

Scaling bankable peatland projects for water security

Summary: Healthy peatlands are critical for water security as well as for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Moreover, peatlands generate important benefits for people, businesses and nature. Yet, these ecosystems are being lost at unprecedented rates. Collective action is needed to replicate and scale bankable projects in these important ecosystems. The goal of this interactive session is to harness support for solutions that reconcile peatland values with economic and social goals and to develop a path for replication and scale up.
